To set free means to release, to get out of captivity, to get out of bondage, to get emancipated or to gain freedom. For one not to be free, means his right to freedom has been bridged by an authority greater than him or by somebody more powerful than he is. Hence, he needs to get an attorney or seek the intervention of higher authority. Someone more powerful than the one infringing on his right to freedom. Without this, he is bound to remain captive by the force greater than him. Hence a wise man begins to seek every possible solution to his problem.
Freedom is not lawlessness or the license to do whatever one wishes, but it is the power to determine for oneself what one ought to be. Hence, true freedom is the power of true self-determination. Now, in so many ways, people can be held captives knowingly or unknowingly. The worst type of captivity is the captivity in which the victim is unaware. In this case so many people, especially Christians, have been in bondages without knowing. Foreign gods have taken possession of their lives and hence, have kept them bound. It takes consciousness to realize that one is under captivity, be it to the state laws, self-imposed, and all the rest.
One could be held captive by his conscience… and they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: Jn 8:9. When one is in a state of sin, he is a slave to sin and hence is under captivity of sin. This person does not enjoy the true freedom and joy the children of God enjoy.
Hence, for one to attain freedom, he has to be free from sin and be a disciple of Jesus Christ and live in Christ teachings (Jn 8:31-32). One has to come to the knowledge of the truth to be really free. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. It is only when Christ as the son of God liberates us from sin, then we can be really free. If the son sets you free, then you are free indeed. (Jn 8:32). In other to achieve total freedom, then we have to turn to Jesus the Saviour who stated it clearly in Jn 14:6… I am the way, the Truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Jesus has connected the Truth and the Son, in other words, He is both the truth and the son. If we know Jesus as the truth, and live according to His teachings, then we will enjoy total freedom.
